What is DIRECT-MS and how can you help?

It is, we feel, time well spent in your quest for knowledge about this condition and the steps being taken to try and find the causes.
DIRECT-MS is a charity which is dedicated to finding the cause of MS. It is organized and operated by persons directly affected by MS. NO ONE receives a salary and the minor overhead costs are entirely covered by donations from the directors. ALL other donations go ENTIRELY to research.
DIRECT-MS is a registered Canadian charity and all donations are tax deductible in most countries (check with an accountant if unsure).
The charity was established because of significant differences between the research and funding priorities of DIRECT-MS and national MS charities
throughout the world. DIRECT-MS supports clinical trials which directly test the concepts for MS cause. This will allow the cause of MS to be found within a reasonable time frame. National charities fund mainly very long term research which has no hope of identifying the cause of MS in the foreseeable future.
National charities spend the majority of money collected on staff salaries, benefits, facilities and travel. Only 20-25% of funds collected are spent on research.
DIRECT-MS spends all donations excepting those of the directors on research.
At DIRECT-MS all organizers are directly affected by MS. When the cause of MS is found all those directly connected with DIRECT-MS will benefit greatly.
The first research initiative funded by DIRECT-MS will be a clinical trial which tests the concept that dietary factors play a major role in MS. Internationally known researchers in neurology and nutrition have committed to such research when sufficient funding is available. The clinical trials will use MRI scans, neurologic exams and immune markers in both a group on a special diet and a control group to test the effectiveness of diet revision on disease progression.
We strongly suggest that you also visit the Multiple Sclerosis Dietary Research site. This site is replete with information that every MS patient should have, and is supported by and the home page of the Direct-MS chairity.
Positive results will provide all persons with MS with an effective, no cost therapy for halting or slowing disease progress. Negative results will finally settle the diet question and persons with MS will be able to eat as they please without worry or guilt.
