Welcome to my Diabetes Recipes Links !

Welcome to my Diabetes Links and Recipes. Please update your favorite, bookmark, or link to my Diabetes Links to ensure you can return here.

Like many on our small green orb, I am a diabetic. I have been diagnosed as a type II diabetic for over 14 years now, and find changing my eating habits the hardest thing to do.

I am not what one considers being the "typical body shape" of a diabetic adult. Though I love good food, I have always been slim in stature, and indeed, though now 67 years of age, maintain the same weight I did when I was in high school in the late 1950's. It is not from good management, but rather that I have never had what one would consider a big appetite. Unfortunately for me, I can literally rise in the morning, have two pieces of toast and a cup of coffee, and not eat again until dinnertime that night. And the kicker? I don't feel hungry at all during the day.

My wife, and indeed, many of my friends, say "I wonder what that's like?" All I can say is that though I have tried not to follow that as a habit, I can do it without discomfort. And I have also learned from bitter experience (read my heart site) that diabetics do NOT necessarily feel things, or at least don't feel them the way others may. *shrugs* And as an example, consider having a massive heart attack and feeling that it was flatulence (as I did). Not a recommended situation I can tell you.

Therefore, when my diabetes professionals (doctor, nurse, and dietitian) said that I MUST eat every three hours, it hit me like a brick. Though I love good food, the mere thought of eating something every three hours horrified me. To make matters worse, what would I eat? The dreams of candy bars, ice cream, donuts, and other tasty foods skipped through my mind, but notice I said "skipped through". I'm also aware that on a regular basis, that is NOT what they meant. So, the quest for recipes that might be able to help started. Yes, I know I can eat fruit or raw vegetables as a snack, but consider how boring that becomes, and how quickly you would dread the thought of yet another salad or another banana or apple.

So I searched the net to find links that not only I might use, but others like me, who are diabetic and must therefore watch what they eat, and must eat on a regular basis throughout the day might find useful as well. Though I have found many (listed below) the search continues. This page won't be updated on any particularly regular basis, but when I find useful links for diabetics like myself, they will be put here.

And thus, dear reader, I encourage you to pass the link to this page on to any of your acquaintances who may also be diabetic. And indeed, you may well find yourself that these recipes are not only tasty but also a more healthy way of life for most. Help spread the word about this terrible condition, and join with me in helping those with diabetes live a more enjoyable and healthy existence. Enjoy!

Special Note: Some of the recipe sites have died and many more have come into being. Thus you will see below a much expanded list of sites you should have a look at for recipes to help you control your BSL. If a site you once saw here is no longer here, then it is one of those that has passed on into the Great Web in the Sky. Likewise, if you come across a diabetic recipe site you think I should add, PLEASE, let me know. If, on the other hand, you find a link that is no longer valid, PLEASE let me know about that as well. Email is on the right side of the page where it says "Contact Me" Thanks for your support and enjoy the links.

Special Note: There has been a change to one of the sites listed below, and a lot more content added at their new site. Please have a look at the Living with Diabetes and a Diabetic Diet site, and their recipe section which can be found at the Diabetic Recipes for the Diabetic Diet site. These both have recently been substantially updated and do deserve a look. The advances in diabetic care are happening almost daily now. Hopefully a cure or a more easily managed regimen will be found soon. In the mean time, keep checking your BSL, keep things under control, and enjoy life. ;-)

One of the things that all endocrinologists like to see is the blood glucose readings of their patients on a regular basis so that they can offer advice on insulin dosage and diabetic management. A fellow in the USA wrote a wonderful site which allows the registered user to upload their BSL readings on a regular basis, and then to notify their endocrinologist what the site name is that they provide you with, so that he/she can check their patient's BSL at any time they wish on the net. The site, called PlasmaGlucose.com - your web-based blood sugar diary! is a free service and I think deserves recognition. It also sets up either the US/Canada way of measuring BSL levels, and the mmol/ltr scale that the rest of the world uses. Which one to use is the patient's choice. And, this is FREE. I'm amazed that it is and personally send my compliments to this wonderful software writer for providing such a valuable resource to diabetic patients worldwide. Well done, and if you are a diabetic, do look this one over and join today.

Important Information - Please Read

I, like many, suffer from a condition known as Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy - that condition where cells in the extremeties (in my case, from the knees down) were dying. There are two types of this condition, one where the patient simply has loss of feeling in their extremeties and the opposite (which I had) where the pain is indeed horrendous and constant. I suffered with this for over 6 years and though I had good pain killers, until recently life was truly hell. I even had graduated to needing a wheeled device to ensure I didn't fall down when I tried to walk.

A very good friend in the USA contacted me and said "Mac, have you ever heard of Acetly-L-Carnitine ? It is a combination of amino acids and there is a medical study saying that it helps with neuropathic pain." I had to admit that I hadn't heard of it but read the medical study which you will find HERE

If you read the link and then look near the bottom of the page you will find the link to the medical study itself. Having read it all I sent it onto my doctor and asked his opinion. His reaction was "Well, it can't hurt anything and you might save some money in pain medication. Give it a try." Based on that I went to our local health food store and asked if they had it which they did. They also had a different one called N Acetyl Carnitine at close to half the price. I took the first one (later found the second one does NOT do the same thing at all) and friends. the result is nothing short of miraculous. I am TOTALLY OUT OF PAIN after being in pain for 6 years.

Therefore if you have Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, please, for your own sake, find this locally and try it. You need 1/4 of a teaspoon dissolved in fruit juice (it tastes terrible if you don't mask it well with fruit juice - trust me) and try it. My own experience was nothing short of miraculous. I was Out of pain - ALL pain, within 2 hours of taking it the first time.

Friends, I am not going to try and sell you this, or suggest a brand name (the one I have is by MUSASHI corporation but I'm sure there are many other manufacturers) but ONLY get and use the Acetyl-L-Carnitine variety. You can look in health food stores for it (at the moment that's the only place I've found it though my chemist shop tells me they can get it as well).

This is truly miraculous and I hope and pray that you have the same result with it I have. To be pain free finally is an absolute miracle and I thank the dear friend who alerted me about this wonderful powder from the bottom of my heart. Enjoy your search but do try it please. Being pain free is the most wonderful feeling.
