Updated 01 October 2007 Queensland, Australia Time
Hello and welcome to Mac's Picks of the Week. If you are interested in why this site exists, how it operates, and a little about Mac, then click on the Why and How Info link and see what is there. When you have finished please return to this Home page and see what sites I have chosen this week to receive a Mac's Picks of the Week award. Thank you for visiting and please share this site with friends, family, and colleagues who you feel will enjoy it.
This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Monday Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 10 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit often.
NOTE: If you wondered where the site update was for last week, I simply was away at a festival held here in the city of Toowoomba here in Australia and couldn't get to a computer long enough to put it up. The Festival? Have a look at the photos I've put on Mac's Flicker Site and you'll see some good and some bad shots of the flowers we saw and the local parade that was held for the festival. If you're a flower buff you might like some of the displays the folk in Toowoomba put up for viewing. I certainly did. So in essence there was no update last week. My apologies for any inconvenience. *smile*
Have you signed up for a new service of some kind online recently? Did you use your real email address to register? Will you end up with an inbox filled with spam now that you've given out your real email address? Actually you might be lucky. However the next time you sign up for something online why not use a disposable email address such as the ones offered for free at ZoEmail? You might find that a disposable email address like this one could save you from spam advertising and let's face it, no one likes spam. Have a look, then bookmark this one for future use.
I realise that most of the things I do on my site are geared around the PC and PC users rather than the Apple computer users, but that's simply because I'm a PC fan. For those of you who are Apple fans, you might like to have a look at the InterfaceLIFT ShapeShifter Mac OS X Themes (by date) site, where you can choose a completely different theme (icons, colour schemes, cursors, etc) to brighten up your own machine. This one is specifically for Apple users but it's worth a bookmark if you are one.
We all face having to do minor repairs around the dwelling we reside in, no matter whether you own it or rent it. Thus, sites like the 1478 Household tips, handy hints and thrifty ideas - @Tips.Net site can come in handy, especially when you're going to try and fix something but don't know how. Have a look and browse around this site. 1478 ideas does take a little time, but I'll wager you'll find something of use here.
Everyone has done one of those personality tests at one time or another and from experience I would suggest they are not something you build your life around. However they can be fun to take at times, and thus the ColorQuiz.com site, which bills itself as the "The free five minute personality test!" shouldn't take a lot of time but might be fun to play with. Enjoy.
One of the older physical fitness programs, developed in Canada actually, is the 5BX program. It's had many revisions over the years and indeed, if you once were fit but now find that you get winded on escalators, maybe it's time to look at it again, and indeed, the site called Getting fit again could be something to add to your regimen of fitness improvement. Have a look and give it a try. It's not the easiest of physical fitness programs but it has stood the test of time and it's still developing. I might give it a try myself.
When one thinks, in the western world, about Vietnam, food usually isn't the first thing that pops into your mind. However why not have a look at the All Vietnamese Recipes and Cuisine site as you might just be surprised at the number of easy to prepare and tasty sounding recipes to be had. Give this one a try. You might just be surprised at what you find.
When you write reports or discussions you can fall into the trap of using the same word or phrase over and over again. One way to find alternatives to your favourite word is to look it up in a Thesaurus. That is what the Thesaurus Search Page - Infoplease.com site will also do for you. It's even easier than doing it in book form, as you simply enter the word you don't wish to use again and hit enter and you find alternatives that still mean the same thing but are different ways of saying it. This one is definitely worth a bookmark.
If you are a student and will be doing or are doing British History then you might want to have a look at the British History Online site. You must admit you'll be hard pressed to find a more authoritative source for your information. Have a look and delve into the real history of Great Britain. It's not all cricket and rugby. *smile*
One of the subjects one takes in school that causes many to have sleepless nights before exams, is math. While you're on holiday or vacation why not, at your leisure, browse through and play the Basic Skill Practice Games and see if your math understanding improves? I believe it will, and let's face it, if you can make math fun then you're onto something. Have a look and see how well you can complete these games.
We all know that Google as well as other large sites will find us maps. However have you seen the Multimap - Online Maps to Everywhere site and do you have it bookmarked yet? Yes, it includes maps of almost the entire planet, and has three ways of looking at them. Have a look and see if it can help you. It should be able to with the large amount of information it has at your beck and call.
More and more people are storing files online so that others can access them on a "when needed" basis. However do you know of more than one site that offers free storage? Wendy Boswell at about.com has compiled a great list of these valuable sites, and you can read her article at the Free Online Storage Sites - The Best Free Online Storage Sites on the Web site. You might also like to subscribe to her newsletter. I have and it's well worth the time taken in reading it weekly. She knows her stuff. Enjoy.
Did you ever have a hobby of collecting things? What about collecting things that seem strange to other people? How about, for instance, collecting things like you find on the mycrazyhobby.com a crazy (but legal) street sign and traffic light collection site? Stop signs? Traffic lights? Yield signs? Hmmm, maybe my collection of dust isn't so farfetched after all *chuckles*.
