Mac's Picks is a collection of family friendly interesting and useful sites, updated weekly. These sites are family friendly, and cover subjects dealing with a focus on the family as a whole, search, internet, internet radio, news, health, medical resources, household hints, education, educational resources, recipes, food, strange, different, help pages, homework, kids, diy, sites I call "head scratchers", and/or new sites dealing with all kinds of things of use to the general internet community. To find the criteria I use, simply click on the "Why How Info" link on the right side of this page.
This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Monday evening Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 9 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit often.
Important Note: If you are returning to my page, welcome back! Please click your "Refresh" or "Reload" button on the top of your Internet browser to ensure you are seeing the current week's page of my "Picks of the Week". Also, I would love for you to make my site your home page. Simply click on Tools - Options in Explorer, or Edit - Preferences in Netscape, and click Use Current and it's done.
I tend, when giving talks on the vagaries of the Internet, to use Microsoft PowerPoint as a program to emphasize the subject I'm speaking on. I find it to be one of the better programs for graphic presentation of ideas and concepts. However I occasionally find myself tiring of the backgrounds supplied with the program and wishing for something else of interest to flash up the information against. Thus, the free backgrounds powerpoint background templates- indezine.com - powerpoint, presentations site, though somewhat lacking in a site name (yes, that's what it's called) is none the less overflowing with backgrounds, templates, and all manner of things that one can use in PowerPoint with good effect. You do have to register to use the site, but that is free as well. If you're a PowerPoint user as I am, this one will definitely be worth a bookmark.
I am constantly appalled to hear of the cost of medical help in some of the more advanced civilizations on the planet, and though I now live in Australia I was born in the US, and its health system leaves a lot to be desired for the general public. No wonder people seek online help with medical problems they have. And, much of it is simply informational as well as providing guides to the general public about the latest advancements in treating various disease states. For instance, the Women's Health - Health - The New York Times site is well worth having a look at. It does seem to keep up with the latest information to help women chose their own best course of action in maintaining their health and the health of their families.
Most folk love seafood of one sort or another. Occasionally you may wish to know how to properly prepare a feast from the deep and the Seafood Plus cook shellfish, fish, and more recipes site should come in handy when that mood strikes. It certainly has some delicious sounding ways to prepare that seafood delicacy. Have a look. It might be just what you're looking for.
Various sites come and go, and some stay for the long haul, change their online location, and improve with age. Hopefully mine has done that as well over time. I recently was shown that a site I had awarded back in 2004, which was then housed on a server and under a domain name that wasn't their own, and had an unfortunate name as well, had now obtained its own domain name, has increased in size and helpfulness over time, improved its name, and most certainly deserves to be brought to your attention again. I speak of the Cheapstingybargains.com - Free Online Coupons, Dell, Overstock, Amazon! site and am pleased to show it to you and award it again for its efforts. First seen here in the week of 14 December 2004, it is well worth a look and a bookmark (or update of an old bookmark) for frequent revisiting if you're looking for bargains online. You will most certainly find them here. A well done site, and a great help to those of us who would like to save a few quid in the process.
We often hear of the younger generation not getting enough exercise in today's modern society, and thus see the problem of childhood obesity rear its ugly head. The KIDNETIC.COM site is a fun site, filled with ideas, games, and tasks to keep the younger members fit and healthy. Have a look, then go do the things found there with them. It might help you as well as them. *smile*
It is pleasing to see others keeping the general Internet population aware of new things of interest on the net. Thus the Neat New Stuff on the Net - Weekly Reviews of New Sites by Marylaine Block site is certainly one to see and to revisit again and again. It is written and published by the person stated in the title, who also calls herself a "Librarian without walls". I think that's a great title and the site well worth a bookmark. Enjoy.
The necessity of having a competent Antivirus program on your system is of constant importance for the safety of your system. Thus, the AV-Comparatives site, which compares antivirus products independently, is a good site for you to have and to bookmark for future use as well. How does your AV program compare?
And while we're on the subject of comparison, which search engine do you use, one of the big names or maybe a Metasearch facility? The Search Engine Watch Blog, which was also first seen on here in 2004, is well worth another visit to see how they stack up at the moment. Remember, don't just use the same search facility all the time, but rather use a multiplicity of search facilities. In that way you are more assured of finding what you seek.
I love listening to music as I surf the net and, it's easy to do. For instance, if you hop over to the PublicRadioFan.com site and click on one of the various programs broadcast over the net, you can do the same. This site shows you what music programs are on now for your enjoyment. Have a look and crank up your speakers (or don your headphones if you're not wishing to disturb others while you listen).
At times finding the type of file or program you need to accomplish a job on your computer is the easy part. Finding out which one is the best for the job, without downloading a dozen or so to try, is much more of a problem. Therefore the SnapFiles site lets you download freeware and shareware software programs, and onsite, they are fully reviewed and rated as well. Now that has to be of help. I'd bookmark this site for future reference as well.
In various parts of the globe there are various types of animals who are in danger of extinction and though bats wouldn't normally spring to mind, they are in trouble as well. Thus the Welcome to Bat Conservation International site is here to promote awareness of this small creature that helps with the ecological balance in so many different ways. Have a look and you'll find some interesting information about these smallish creatures.
Do you have a friend who constantly spouts pieces of totally useless though interesting information at every opportunity? Would you like to have your own collection of such trivia to hit back with? Then the Strange But True at StrangeFacts.com! #1 for strange facts, titbits and useless information site is one you're going to love. Hop over and have a look. Now you too can bore others to death at that next party. Enjoy.

Rebecca Game of "Digital Women - Women with their modems
running...", is a graphic designer who is superb to say the least. Rebecca designed this "new look" web site specifically for me, and I can't praise her work enough. Her site, dedicated to women on the net, is worth seeing and bookmarking for future reference. If you are looking for links of interest to women, please visit her site. And if you need the best graphic designer on the planet, I seriously can't recommend her more highly. Oh yes, and when you visit her site, tell her Mac sent you. Thank you Rebecca. I am eternally grateful for your assistance and expertise. ;-)
Search my site to see if I have given a "Pick of the Week"' to any family friendly term you wish here. If I have you will be shown the page(s) it was listed on.
Search the net via Google based on the type of content found on my site from here. The balloons show sites close to the content of my site.
