Updated 10 July 2006 Queensland, Australia Time

Mac's Picks is a collection of family friendly interesting and useful sites, updated weekly. These sites are family friendly, and cover subjects dealing with search, internet, internet radio, news, health, medical resources, household hints, education, educational resources, recipes, food, strange, different, help pages, homework, kids, diy, sites I call "head scratchers", and/or new sites dealing with all kinds of things of use to the general internet community. To find the criteria I use, simply click on the "Why How Info" link on the right side of this page.

This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Monday evening Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 9 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit often.

Important Note: If you are returning to my page, welcome back! Please click your "Refresh" or "Reload" button on the top of your Internet browser to ensure you are seeing the current week's page of my "Picks of the Week". Also, I would love for you to make my site your home page. Simply click on Tools - Options in Explorer, or Edit - Preferences in Netscape, and click Use Current and it's done.

Something New

If you look near the bottom of this page you will see a poll dealing with the categories of sites you might like to see more of. I don't collect personal data from you at any time, but ask that you take a moment and let me know, by clicking on your favourite category, what type of site you would like to see. If the category is not listed, then please email me with that information (see the right side of this page for the "Contact Me" link) and I will try to add that as well. You have, by your regular weekly visit to my family friendly category site, made this site into one that receives over 500 people per day at times, so why not have your input into what I show as well? Please also read the "Why How Info" link on the right side of this page to see the criteria I use. Thank you in advance for your help.

Finding sites on the net that have links to places that you know are safe for the younger members of your family can be a daunting task. However the Linkasaurus ® - Official Kids Sites site fills that need admirably. Have a look and bookmark it for your young folks surfing.

One of the foods I actually love on hot dogs and/or with some wonderful tasty European sausages is sauerkraut. It has a strange smell I admit, but used correctly it also is a taste sensation that mixes so well with certain other foods. Thus I was interested to see that it is also used in many other ways when I found the Sauerkraut Recipes for Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Dishes, Breads, and Desserts site. Now, I'm adventurous but dessert? Think I'll pass on the Sauerkraut Jello thanks. Enjoy.

It is good to see more and more health related sites online as some can be particularly useful sources of information. I feel that the Estronaut Boldly Exploring Women's Health site is one of those because it appeals because it appears to explain a lot of common problems faced by the female side of our populations, most importantly, with good practical advice. Have a look. It might be just what the Doctor ordered.

You will know that viruses can be a real pain, especially if one gets onto your system and starts doing some malicious spying or deleting of files or turning your computer into a robot to propagate itself to all of those you email. However, there is a new one that really is nasty and I feel you should be warned about it. Hop over to the online article titled New virus seeks 'ransom' for computer files - Yahoo! News and have a read. In particular pay special attention to the last two paragraphs. Then make sure your anti-virus program has daily updates to ensure it can protect you from this sort of thing. Don't be scared off by it, be prepared.

One of the things I love about the net is the fantastic plethora of free computer programs there are for you to download and use. One site that seems to do a very good job of showing you where to get programs on almost any subject is the Free Internet Programs site. Here you can browse around and find exactly what you need. It also has a link to the latest version of the Free avast! 4 Home Edition - Free antivirus software (which I use myself by the way) and it is an excellent program with good free virus protection for home PC. If you have an office or company of your own I would advise purchasing the commercial version so that your workplace is protected as well. That version isn't free but it's worth the cost. Have a look and happy downloading.

While surfing the net I love listening to streaming music. If you haven't tried it yet, you should, and the SHOUTcast Free internet radio! site will let you pick the station that sounds like you, and play it by clicking on the "Tune in" icon that appears on the left side of the station name. Have a look, turn on those speakers, click and enjoy.

Are you one of those who contend with physical pain as a normal everyday occurrence? I unfortunately am (peripheral diabetic neuropathy) and the site named Pain World - Chronic Pain Support - Are you New to Chronic Pain. is a great site to learn what you can do about it, and also the fact that you're not alone. I find that their home page, titled Pain World - Chronic Pain Support - Main Page is a useful place to start, but if you are new to the problem, do read the first link. It isn't easy but you can get through it most of the time. This is of such importance friends, that I specifically request that you please pass it on to anyone you know who is in this circumstance. It might help.

I love taking photos and then manipulating them to their best advantage. Composition of photos however is almost a science in itself. One of the early masters at composition, a man named David Moore, had an uncanny eye for taking the right shot at the right time. Hop over to the David Moore 100 Photographs site and have a browse around. You'll soon understand what good photo composition is from seeing these amazing photos. I did.

My wife has a sense of humour almost as strange as mine. Thus, her favourite character is one that she even uses in work occasionally. If you're a fan, or if you have never had a look before, hop over to The Dilbert Blog and you'll get the general idea of why this particular cartoon is loved by many in the business world. Enjoy.

I like finding that many online share information with us all rather than keeping it locked away. I do understand business necessity of keeping some data confidential for marketing reasons but outside of that I personally would like to see more transparency in the things governments and some professions keep to themselves. Thus, I suggest that having a look at the Public Library of Science site, which states that it is "a non-profit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource" both refreshing and potentially very useful to mankind in general. Have a look. You might find data you need, not want, but need to know about.

Heard any good jokes lately? Hop over to the TBS Department of Humor Analysis site and you'll find explanations on how humour works. If you've noticed that some jokes affect some positively but not everyone is amused, it would be a good idea to see why this happens. Have a look. It's worth the time.

How long has it been since you saw a good optical illusion? I find them fascinating, and thus the Optical Illusion - Perception puzzles, Visual Perception, Optical illusions and Paradoxes site is a real treat to visit. I wonder if that fellow will ever get to the top of the stairs? *smiles*. Enjoy.

Digital
Women - Women with their modems running...

Rebecca Game of "Digital Women - Women with their modems running...", is a graphic designer who is superb to say the least. Rebecca designed this "new look" web site specifically for me, and I can't praise her work enough. Her site, dedicated to women on the net, is worth seeing and bookmarking for future reference. If you are looking for links of interest to women, please visit her site. And if you need the best graphic designer on the planet, I seriously can't recommend her more highly. Oh yes, and when you visit her site, tell her Mac sent you. Thank you Rebecca. I am eternally grateful for your assistance and expertise. ;-)

Search my site to see if I have given a "Pick of the Week"' to any family friendly term you wish here. If I have you will be shown the page(s) it was listed on.
