Hello and welcome to Mac's Picks of the Week. If you are interested in why this site exists, how it operates, and a little about Mac, then click on the Why and How Info link and see what is there. When you have finished please return to this Home page and see what sites I have chosen this week to receive a Mac's Picks of the Week award. Thank you for visiting and please share this site with friends, family, and colleagues who you feel will enjoy it.

This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Monday Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 10 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit often.

The environment and ecology are all newsworthy items now. Most of us realise that if we don't change our ways, this planet will not sustain the life we wish for our grandchildren. It's not a matter of "if" any more, but rather "when". Thus a site like the Earthline - Directory of Environmental, vegetarian and Animal Rights Web Sites is actually an interesting portal to browse around as it has a very good set of links to sites we all should look at, whether we agree with what is being said or not. Even the site itself says it is "An Ecological Directory - BRINGING OUR EARTH AND ITS PEOPLE TOGETHER". Now that has to be a good idea (even if they haven't learned to shut off their caps key).

Ever been online and needed to find the definition of a word? The OneLook Dictionary Search is a good place to bookmark for just such an event. I find it well written and a good source of instant information. I think you will as well.

Sometimes when you hear something or maybe have seen it on television, the scientific basis of what you are seeing is hard to grasp. Thus the Science Clarified site can be a real help in understanding those sticky problems all of us face at one time or another. Have a look and learn something.

As you well know, Google, Yahoo, Black Stump, Dog Pile, MS Search, and Alta Vista are all good search sites. However you should possibly also have a look at the IceRocket blog search site as well, especially if you are looking for a blog, as it will search blogs online until it finds one dealing with the subject you wish to find. You'll be amazed at how many blogs exist, and this is a good way to sift through them to find your subject of interest.

If you would like to start your own blog, but need somewhere to host it online, you just might like to have a look at the blogthing site as it is a free blog hosting site. Thus you can write your blog and put it online here... for no cash at all. Nice site and a good help to those who need it.

Teachers and lecturers are amazing people. Not only do they need to know their subject but they also need to know how to impart that knowledge to others. The latter is most often the downfall of teachers, not the former. Thus, a site like the Power Tools Topic Index site, which is written and directed specifically at the teaching community is a boon to have handy when needed. If you teach others this site can really help you. Have a look.

One of the cable channels I love watching is The History Channel - Home Page. It often has subjects I'm not particularly interested in (how many times do we fight the 2nd world war?) but it also has some wonderful insights into history of all kinds throughout the ages. I think it's a great site to see and a wonderful channel on the box to watch as well. Hopefully it will help educate all of us in one way or another. Maybe you will feel the same way.

Who would have thought that a company that makes salt would have a list of ways of using salt in your DIY projects? Well, the folk at the Morton®Salt - when it rains it pours® - Household Tips site have some pretty useful tips for you to have handy. Have a look. That salt shaker might come in useful after all.

When searching for things on the Net one needs to always use more than one search facility to ensure you will find what you seek. And one site, called the Planetsearch Metasearch advanced search site, will search 16 search engines at once. Now that has to be good and is well worth you trying and bookmarking. Just think - all this help and for free as well. *smile*

We recently in Australia saw a documentary on folk who have fallen for scams and to be frank, it's scary stuff. A friend of ours got caught up in one... and lost some money before realising it was a scam. To prevent you from not knowing what to look out for, hop over to the ScamWatch site, read it, then bookmark it and keep returning to it at least once a month for updates. Seriously - scammers are getting smarter... but they CAN be beaten. Have a look.

We all know of NASA, the US National Aeronautics And Space Administration, but have you seen some of the highlights of their work? Hop over to the NASA - Multimedia -- Highlights site and have a look and a listen. Then try to think of all the calculations involved in making things like this happen so that we can all further our education about the galaxy we live in. This really is a wonderful site with some great multimedia for you to see.

And speaking of mathematical equations and calculations, have a look at the mathematical facts strange maths sums calculations information problems site, which despite its horrendously long name, is a good site to spend some time around. Have a look, learn, and enjoy.

Digital
