Hello and welcome to Mac's Picks of the Week. If you are interested in why this site exists, how it operates, and a little about Mac, then click on the Why and How Info

link and see what is there. When you have finished please return to this Home page and see what sites I have chosen this week to receive a Mac's Picks of the Week award. Thank you for visiting and please share this site with friends, family, and colleagues who you feel will enjoy it.

This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Monday Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 10 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit often.

Do you wish you had a pet? No doubt some wish they had a cat but because of all manner of reasons it isn't possible. Well, all is not lost. If you pop over to the Cute Cat site and keep your mouse moving around the cat you'll find it has all kinds of fun with the cat. stroke its tummy and chest and it will purr, stroke its tail and ... well, you play with it and find out for yourself. Isn't it amazing what computer graphics can do, and how amused we get by them? And finally - no kitty litter to clean or even cat food to buy. Now you can't ask for more than that can you?

If you're relatively new to the net (and even if you're not) you will find the wonderful tutorial called Web Search 101 - Learn to Search the Web a valuable lesson to learn. This will show you how to "effectively" search and find the things you are looking for. Wendy Boswell from About.com has done a wonderful tutorial and you can also do the course in weekly emailed lessons, all free of charge. Isn't it time you really found out how to search effectively?

You will no doubt have received spam email, that nasty junk mail in the inbox of your email program. If you haven't, you will with increasing regularity. Therefore you should read the site titled Spam The introduction so that you are armed with good knowledge about what to do with it, and what not to do. It's in your best interest to do this course. And again, it's free.

Don't you hate it when people use acronyms for things? What makes it even more frustrating is when they simply do not or seemingly will not explain what the acronym stands for. As an example I found a site titled AARP Social Security Blog which is a good piece of information about a group in the USA who are fighting what appears to be unjust legislation being introduced that will negatively affect pensions. Thus it is for USA viewers only apparently. I searched their site from top to bottom, and could not find anywhere what the acronym AARP stands for. I'm guessing it stands for the American Association of Retired Persons (and I do mean guessing - if someone knows, please email me and let me know too). Friends, if you have a website with an acronym, PLEASE find somewhere to explain what it means for the rest of the internet community? It is in their, and your, best interest to do so.

Occasionally I run across a site that I've awarded in the past, and I certainly did this week. I visited this site two years ago and it's worth revisiting. Have a look, and maybe bookmark the site called Singingfish - the audio-video search engine which needs to be bookmarked for future use. Note the Family Filter checkbox on the upper left of their search page. Let's keep it appropriate for the whole family to enjoy.

One of the things most folk need to know when shopping online is whether the person or company they are buying from are real or not, and how to contact them if there is a problem. One way of knowing, and indeed, knowing who owns any site you visit, is to go to the CallingID Know who you are dealing with on the Internet site, read their information, download and install their add-on to your browser, and from then on you know who you are dealing with online. I feel this is definitely worth a look.

Being summer time here in Australia a lot of folk are away camping, either in the bush or at the beach. One thing that you normally still have to do is cook. Thus the Australian Recipes, Bush Tucker Recipes & Australian Cooking Benjamin Christie, Australian Guest Chef Consultant site might be a bit longwinded, but it is a real boon to have handy. Everything from the famous Australian camp bread known as damper, to paperbark smoked snapper fillets is here for the tasting. Stoke up that barby and enjoy.

There is a very important, though lesser known, archaeological dig site in Israel that is of such importance it has its own website. It is a site composed of cities built on the rubble of other cities, down through the ages, showing and yielding up such important knowledge about various times in its history. Hop over to the The Megiddo Expedition site, have a read, look around, and you'll see why I think it's worth a look.

Speaking of history, one can't go past the V&A - Home Page (Victoria & Albert) museum site in the UK. This museum is a wonderful look at the life and times of these two important individuals in British history. Have a look.

Sometimes you need to take a break and just enjoy things on the net. For instance, the Watch TV Shows Online is an archive of older television shows as well as some movies that you can watch online for free. I enjoy some of the old television shows, though others may enjoy the movies more. See which strikes your fancy.

It is possible, and at times possibly even preferable to look at a site offline. How do you do that? You simply go to the HTTrack Website Copier site, download their offline browser, and give it a try. In effect this browser harvests any site you tell it to and stores it on your computers hard drive, which in turn allows you to browse the site even when you are offline. Sounds like a winner idea to me. Just remember to delete the site once you are through viewing it. Hard drives fill up quickly as it is.

And finally this week we have a site that shows what can be done with the simple aluminium can. You can, if you are industrious enough, build some impressive sculpture. Hop over to the Welcome to Canstruction! site and have a browse around. You may find it as interesting as I did.
