Updated 30 January 2006 Queensland, Australia Time

Mac's Picks is a collection of family friendly interesting and useful sites, updated weekly. These sites may be search engines, medical resources, household hints, educational resources, recipe sites, sites I call "head scratchers", and/or new sites dealing with all kinds of things of use to the general internet community. To find the criteria I use, simply click on the "Why and How Info" link on the right side of this page.

This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Monday evening Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 9 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit often.

Important Note: If you are returning to my page, welcome back! Please click your "Refresh" or "Reload" button on the top of your Internet browser to ensure you are seeing the current week's page of my "Picks of the Week". Also, I would love for you to make my site your home page. Simply click on Tools - Options in Explorer, or Edit - Preferences in Netscape, and click Use Current and it's done.

It is the second day of the celebration of the Chinese New Year. This year it started on the 29th of January (yesterday) and I thought you might like to find out more about this holiday that is celebrated by a very large percentage of the world's population. If you hop over to the Chinese New Year - 2006 is Year of Dog site you will find out many interesting facts about this day, and the site named Crafts and Activities for Chinese New Year from the folk at Enchanted Learning .com is also a good site to see. Various members of your family might like to make something to give to someone near to you in celebration of this beginning of their new year. And if you really don't know much about this holiday, hop over to the Chinese New Year site for a nice explanation of the entire celebration. Remember, if you see someone you know, greet them with the traditional Chinese greeting pronounced "Guey Hay Fat Choy!" which means that you hope they have lots of wealth in the coming year. So I hope that you and your family join with me and my family and say to all out there of Chinese descent, Guey Hay Fat Choy!

You will no doubt know that I have, on the right side of this page, a link to my Heart Links, which deal with all manner of information about the heart and heart disease. This week I have added a new site to the list called cardiofiles.net. This site is more like a blog than anything else but it has a lot of people writing to it with a lot of information. I'd suggest that you pass it on to anyone with any form of heart problem (by the way, when was yours checked last?). I also invite you to the page itself which can be found here at my Heart Links site. Have a look.

And, there is also a new site dealing with Diabetic Recipes added this week. The site, called Diabetic Top Recipes - Recipes Dietary @ Cook Advice has many delicious sounding recipes for diabetics like me to have a try at. Remember, a diabetic recipe and way of eating is actually good for all of us, so do have a look at this new site, and of course visit my Diabetic Recipes site right here as well. Enjoy.

One of the older Science related magazines that publish a website as well has celebrated its 125th anniversary issue. Thus, if you click on the 125th Anniversary Issue Science Online Special Feature site you'll not only see this remarkable achievement, but also possibly learn something about science that you were unaware of until now. Interesting site and well worth a bookmark for repeat visits.

I know when I was in high school (yes, they did have those way back then) that chemistry was not one of my better subjects. However, had I thought about it and paid more attention in chemistry class I may have found out many of the mysteries revealed on the site called Chemical & Engineering News What's That Stuff. This site has information about all kinds of things including ink, fireworks, bug sprays, shampoo, and a whole lot more. This site shows you how those things, and many others, are made. Have a browse around and see what you can learn.

The folk at Microsoft have come up with yet another piece of free software for you to download and install which will clear your cache on your hard drive for you. The cache is where temporary internet and program related files are kept. Unfortunately the cache sometimes gets overcrowded or, simply holds images you'll never need again. That is the reason I suggest that everyone hit their "refresh" button when you come to my site, as your cache may show you what was here last week, rather than what is here for the current week. Hop over to the Download details Clear Cache Feature for Internet Explorer site, download and install this great freeware, and stay in touch with the ever changing world of the Internet.

Many folk think that art is only for the artists or those with nothing better to do on a rainy afternoon. However, I think you'll find that the Eye Level site really is art for all of us. It houses some interesting interactive journalism as well. Have a look. I found it interesting and I hope you do as well.

Did you know that Windows has yet another serious flaw in its design? Well, unfortunately it has and you need to do something to correct it on your own machine. I am really going to push this folks, because this is indeed a serious flaw which you should correct as soon as possible. Hop over to the Five Facts About the WMF Flaw site, read it all, and see what you can do to protect your own system. I did.

If, like me, you have a website of some description with an email address attached to it so that others can contact you if they desire to, then you'll also be aware that there are robot spiders crawling the net looking for email addresses so they can sell them on to spammers. However, a little judicious tweaking of that email address will pretty much solve the problem. Hop over and have a look at the Keep your Email Address Hidden from Spambot Spiders site and, as I said, if you have an email link back to you, you might think it's a good idea to change the way it's displayed in your page HTML. I've just done it here and I think it will help to reduce the spam I get now. Have a look and see how simple it is.

Photojournalism is one of those professions that either you are fully committed to or it simply doesn't work. A good photojournalist needs to a) get the photographs, and thus put themselves in the front line as it were, and b) then write the story for publication so that you and I can understand what has happened. There is a site that honors photojournalism titled Magnum In Motion which is showing some of the most powerful photojournalism by some of the finest photographers and journalists around. Though this may not be for the faint hearted, it certainly will prove to be an eye opener.

The younger generation are, in many ways, smarter than we were at that age because of all of the multimedia that surrounds them. They can, if it is used correctly, far surpass our own meager learning and hopefully become better world citizens than we are. To further their education yet keep it interesting enough to want to learn more, the Exploratorium site, which is the museum of science, art and human perception, will go a long way to that end. Why not go there with the younger members of your own family and learn with them? I think they would be pleased if you tagged along.

How many folk doodle? Ok, maybe the phrase is wrong - sketch may be a more appropriate term. Well, what about a collaborative sketch or doodle (take your pick) that tries to include folk from all around the globe to draw something on a theme that changes weekly? Hop over to the SwarmSketch site and join with others around the world to sketch this week's item. At least you'll know you're part of something that potentially is very big *smiles*. Enjoy.

Digital
Women - Women with their modems running...

Rebecca Game of "Digital Women - Women with their modems running...", is a graphic designer who is superb to say the least. Rebecca designed this "new look" web site specifically for me, and I can't praise her work enough. Her site, dedicated to women on the net, is worth seeing and bookmarking for future reference. If you are looking for links of interest to women, please visit her site. And if you need the best graphic designer on the planet, I seriously can't recommend her more highly. Oh yes, and when you visit her site, tell her Mac sent you. Thank you Rebecca. I am eternally grateful for your assistance and expertise. ;-)

Search my site to see if I have given a "Pick of the Week"' to any family friendly term you wish here. If I have you will be shown the page(s) it was listed on.
