Mac's Picks is a collection of family friendly interesting and useful sites, updated weekly. These sites may be search engines, medical resources, household hints, educational resources, recipe sites, sites I call "head scratchers", and/or new sites dealing with all kinds of things of use to the general internet community. To find the criteria I use, simply click on the "Why and How Info" link on the right side of this page.
This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Tuesday evening Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 9 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit often.
Important Note: If you are returning to my page, welcome back! Please click your "Refresh" or "Reload" button on the top of your Internet browser to ensure you are seeing the current week's page of my "Picks of the Week". Also, I would love for you to make my site your home page. Simply click on Tools - Options in Explorer, or Edit - Preferences in Netscape, and click Use Current and it's done.
You are aware that there are many search engines on the net. The one run by Microsoft has been revamped and is trying to give Google a run for their money. Hop over to the ninemsn Search site (and indeed, there may be one in your area as well aligned to a local television channel) and try it out. It may not bring back quite as many sites, but it's certainly fast enough. Definitely worth a look and a bookmark.
Many around the globe need a little help with their health problems, but unfortunately not all governments are good at giving that help. Australia (and New Zealand for the most part) are still working under a socialized medicine framework (Australia slightly more so) and the help is certainly there to keep well and overcome problems. The Welcome to Queensland Health - Helping people to better health and wellbeing site is an example of what is happening here in the Australian State of Queensland. Have a look. It may help you and it may also give you things to ask your own government officials about why you can't have the same level of government assistance. Have a look.
As you well know, there are blogs on all kinds of subjects. This week I thought you might like to have a look at one dedicated to the tsunami that recently happened in the South-East Asian area. Thus, The South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami blog is worth a look. It is not only a blog about the quake, tsunami, and rescue efforts, but also contains good information about how you can help. Great blog.
If you have a younger member of the family or know of a younger person, you might want to pass on the National Geographic Explorer (Student Magazine) - 0105 - for grades 3 - 6 website. It really is a great site and I'll be taking my own 3 year old grandson there at some point. Great information about our planet geared to that level.
I'm working on trying to do and maintain a low GI diet. I don't need to lose weight, but as a diabetic, I do need to start eating more intelligently. Thus, the Pasta Recipes site is a good start as pasta, itself, is a low GI food. Have a look. Maybe you should look at a healthier lifestyle as well?
Some of the things that NASA does impresses me beyond words. Not only do they show us far distant galaxies (look up - many of those stars are our galaxy known as the Milky Way - there are so many others it's uncountable), but now they have also turned their orbiting space cameras our way, back onto earth, and the EO Newsroom New Images Index site will show you what we look like from near space. And the images are awesome to say the least. EO stands for Earth Observatory, and that pretty much explains this site. Have a look. I was impressed and think you will be as well.
If you're one of those who carries a PDA (Personal Data Application) around with you, you may not realize that, if you go to manybooks.net - Free eBooks for your PDA you will be able to do just that, download electronic books to your PDA. Now, that bus or train trip to work doesn't look so bad does it?
If you have a net connection you NEED (not want, need) a firewall to protect you from some of the Internet nasties. So you have one (of course you do) but how effective is it really? Hop over to the LeakTest -- Firewall Leakage Tester site and run their tests against your system and find out. You can't fix a problem if you don't know it exists. This is a great site and worthy of a bookmark to redo in six months time.
If you're a crossword lover, you'll enjoy the One Across site where you can search for crossword puzzle answers, solve crossword puzzles online, find anagrams, get cryptogram help, and much more. Enjoy.
Believe it or not, I started out in life trying to become a musician of sorts. I wanted to teach voice, and also to teach a high school chorus. I was fortunate to have excellent teachers in music who not only encouraged me to peruse my dream, they were also instrumental in gaining me entrance into a prestigious University School of Music. However, two years later life intervened and I didn't finish that degree. The reason for telling you this is to introduce you to the Ricci Adams' Musictheory.net site. This site allows you to obtain free lessons so that you can learn music theory. I know, sounds dull and boring but believe me, if you do this you'll enjoy the music you hear even more because you'll appreciate the work the musicians did to make that lovely sound. This one is a real keeper. Have fun.
If you have a website, there are many times you see something on the net and think "how can I do that for my visitors"? Well, if you hop over to the Free Webmaster Help - Everything A Webmaster Needs- For Free site you'll find most of what you're looking for without it costing you a lot of money in the process. It may not quite contain "everything" you need, but it's darn close and worth a visit. Webmasters-Webmistresses-Webpersons-Webhumans - have a look here, You'll like what you see.
Just above I told you a story about me and my early life. Did you ever think to yourself What If...? Well this person did, and made a sort of timeline of their life, showing what might have happened if they did this or that, made this choice or that one instead of what they did. Have a look. This one isn't strange as such, but more innovative. I think you'll like it. I did.

Rebecca Game of "Digital Women - Women with their modems
running...", is a graphic designer who is superb to say the least. Rebecca designed this "new look" web site specifically for me, and I can't praise her work enough. Her site, dedicated to women on the net, is worth seeing and bookmarking for future reference. If you are looking for links of interest to women, please visit her site. And if you need the best graphic designer on the planet, I seriously can't recommend her more highly. Oh yes, and when you visit her site, tell her Mac sent you. Thank you Rebecca. I am eternally grateful for your assistance and expertise. ;-)
