Mac's Picks is a collection of family friendly interesting and useful sites, updated weekly. These sites may be search engines, medical resources, household hints, educational resources, recipe sites, sites I call "head scratchers", and/or new sites dealing with all kinds of things of use to the general internet community. To find the criteria I use, simply click on the "Why and How Info" link on the right side of this page.
This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Tuesday evening Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 9 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit us often.
Important Note: If you are returning to my page, welcome back! Please click your "Refresh" or "Reload" button on the top of your Internet browser to ensure you are seeing the current week's page of my "Picks of the Week". Also, I would love for you to make my site your home page. Simply click on Tools - Options in Explorer, or Edit - Preferences in Netscape, and click Use Current and it's done.
Well, this past week has seen me clock up yet another year on the chronological calendar and no one is more surprised about that than me *chuckles*. However, it did bring to mind that little incident with the quadruple bypass that saved my life last year, and for that I am eternally grateful to a lot of people. And, this week I received an email from a friend in Melbourne that I would like to share with you. It is called Help When You Need It The Most. It could save your or your loved ones, life, so please take a moment and read it in the interest of staying alive. It's worth the time taken to do, and worth passing on to those near and dear to you as well. Thank you all for your support over the years, and I look forward to another year of bringing you good quality, interesting sites to look at. Be well, stay safe, and stay happy. ;-)
In the interest of supplying those of us on the net with the ability of reading text written, in many cases, decades if not hundreds of years ago, the University of Virginia Library has recently published, on its Electronic Text Center site, valuable collections of early manuscripts. It had many things to browse through including the original manuscript writings of George Washington, America's first President. Good reading to be found here. Why not find out for yourself what someone wrote rather than take someone else's word for it? A well done site with loads of useful material for you to see.
Kids need fun. Not only do they learn in classroom situations they also learn to interact with others, social skills, and simply how to do "neat stuff" and have fun. If you have a younger member of your family close by, why not take them with you to the Kaboose.com - Get on board! site? It's loads of fun and a great way to spend some time with your little ones.
You know that I love blogs - those text based diaries online that folk can add to and can follow. One that caught my eye recently is known as I love Jet Noise which describes itself as one that allows you to watch a "pontificating know-it-all and dyspeptic Marine wife and tech wench egg each other on" blog. Sounds like a daytime soap doesn't it? Um, that could be close. *smiles*
One of the things most nutritionists try to instill in us mere mortals is the necessity to eat light things, rather than those laden with too much saturated fat, etc. If you've caught on to this healthier way of eating and living, but wonder how you can really do it in your own home, then hop over to the Cooking Light - Home site and have a browse around. You'll be surprised to see that light food doesn't have to mean tasteless. Give it a try. Your heart will thank you for it.
Ok. I admit it. When I was going through school (back in the days of Socrates *chuckles*) math was definitely not my strong point. Still isn't. But, to some it is a fascinating look into the world around us and how things work. In that conglomeration of things there is a theory called the Riemann Hypotheses that has apparently baffled mathematicians for ages. No one has been able to solve this particular riddle - until now. Louis de Branges website purports to prove once and for all that he has proved the Reimann hypotheses in math. Now, lets see, If two people board a bus at Sydney Airport heading to Coolangata, and the bus travels at 80k per hour....
Most of us have heard of the Lourve, the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), etc, and may have even taken the online tour of both of those. The question must be asked though, we celebrate the good in art, why not the bad? Enter the The Museum Of Bad Art (MOBA) site for your perusal. Yes, it does show what the webmaster of the site feels is the worst art around, but it has to be simply another look at art, doesn't it? Or - does it? You decide.
I have, in online communication, been asked at times by those not fortunate enough to live in Australia, what it's like to live here? To be frank, it's about as close to heaven as you can imagine. Warm tropical South Pacific breezes, sunshine about 345 days a year, 35km long white sand beaches, some of the best shopping and vegetable and fruit growing on the planet - should I go on? To find out how to move to this beautiful part of the world hop over to The Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs and browse around. Is it easy? No. Is it possible? Yes, and these are the folk to let you know how. Hope to see you all soon. *smiles*
TechTV has recently changed hands and I am happy to say that one of the best techos around has stayed with the new group. Yoshi is their techo and equipment guru and really knows his stuff. You can catch up with him at his website called Yoshi.US (Powered by Invision Power Board) where he not only passes on tips to other modders (modifiers) but also hosts a chat forum for modification folk around the planet. Enjoy.
Old fellows like me grew up in the 1950's to the end of the 1970's. There are times when one will catch a song title or phrase and the memory slips back to those fun days. The Search For Songs From 1960-1975 At All But Forgotten Oldies site is a real trip back down memory lane for those of us who are still able to remember the R and R of that era. Hop over and have a look - and turn up your speakers.
Ok, I know we're getting lazy in many ways, but do we really need an online place that will scribble for us? *nods* That's what the S C R I B B L E R site does. You are presented with a blank canvas; you scribble a drawing (surprisingly easy I must say) then pick the color, the line thickness, and just click scribble and watch. *shrugs*. Is there anything else we can get computers and the net to do for us?
For those who are interested in loftier things, space for instance, the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies site is a warehouse of information on space, the studies going on about it, those planned, and how many can become involved if they choose to. Hop over and have a look. I find it fascinating.
I recently sent off a site URL (address) to a friend that purported to state he had won the local New Zealand lottery but forgot to turn in his ticket. He caught on right away (since he doesn't buy a ticket) but his wife apparently didn't, and he had fun with playing that prank on her. If you have a devious streak to you as well, hop over to the StrangeReports.com - Play Pranks Online site where you'll find everything from the Missed Lotto Deadline to fake Police Warrants. Enjoy.

Rebecca Game of "Digital Women - Women with their modems
running...", is a graphic designer who is superb to say the least. Rebecca designed this "new look" web site specifically for me, and I can't praise her work enough. Her site, dedicated to women on the net, is worth seeing and bookmarking for future reference. If you are looking for links of interest to women, please visit her site. And if you need the best graphic designer on the planet, I seriously can't recommend her more highly. Oh yes, and when you visit her site, tell her Mac sent you. Thank you Rebecca. I am eternally grateful for your assistance and expertise. ;-)
