Updated 24 February 2004 Queensland, Australia Time

Mac's Picks is a collection of family friendly interesting and useful sites, updated weekly. These sites may be search engines, medical resources, household hints, educational resources, recipe sites, sites I call "head scratchers", and/or new sites dealing with all kinds of things of use to the general internet community. To find the criteria I use, simply click on the "Why and How Info" link on the right side of this page.

This page is updated on a weekly basis, each Tuesday evening Australian (Queensland) time (GMT + 9 hours according to the world clock). Please come back and visit us often.

Important Note: If you are returning to my page, welcome back! Please click your "Refresh" or "Reload" button on the top of your Internet browser to ensure you are seeing the current week's page of my "Picks of the Week". Also, I would love for you to make my site your home page. Simply click on Tools - Options in Explorer, or Edit - Preferences in Netscape, and click Use Current and it's done.

Did you realise that this is a leap year? Did you also know that the 29th of February is Leap Day? If you hop over to the Leap Years site, and then to the Why Leap Years site you'll get the full story on leap years. Did you also know that, historically, leap day is the onw day every 4 years when women can turn the tables and ask men to marry them? It is. So guys, go hide. Ladies - you go girl *chuckles*.

If you visit my site often you'll know I love a good chuckle. Therefore the Best of RHF Computer, Science and Math Jokes is one you should visit. See? Math, science and computers can be funny too. ;-)

Thinking of renovating your kitchen? Or maybe you're simply rearranging things or installing new appliances? Then the Home Page - Kitchenfix site is one you should have a browse around. It has all kinds of interesting ideas. Enjoy!

Amazing how many of us need to take better care of our cars isn't it? A site that may be of help is the Few simple tips on car maintenance site. As it said, it has a few simple tips you should know about, simple being the operative word here. ;-)

As you are starting to see, I try and find a new BLOG for you each week to have a look at (like the recipe sites I find - and no, I don't weigh 300lbs.. lol). This week I came across a blog that is done not only by one person, but by many, and is an attempt to give lots of folk the change to speak online to their brothers and sisters they may never meet. This one is simply called Living In China. It has, as you will see, the voices of many folk who are experiencing this communications media for the first time. Good to see them all here mind you. After all, six degrees of separation isn't much is it? Drop in and read what they have to say about their part of the world.

And, speaking of a weekly type of pick, here is this weeks recipe site *chuckles*. Actually, this site, called Good Looking Cooking - Recipe Search is not only a repository of information, it also is a search engine that will try to find what you are looking for from it's big and impressive list of recipes. Bookmark this one. It's worth it.

One of the things I do admire about the USA is how it's broadcasting criteria is set up. You have the ability of organizations like the Public Broadcasting System to allow those who may not be able to gain access to the mainstream, to still get online and into your living room. In particular I like the PBS Kids website as it gives further and background information into what they are seeing or have seen on their television. Nice site, and well worth taking your younger folk to.

"When I was in school". My goodness. How does that phrase date me? lol. Well, even in my day we had schools. Mind you, they were normally held sitting under a tree with a man called Socrates in attendance *lol*. Seriously, Ancient History is something that I found interesting, but really used to poke fun at in a way. Now I don't have to do that any more. "Because I've grown up" I hear you ask? Not likely. Now I let the folk at the Classics Unveiled - Main Page do it for me. Seriously, this is ancient history with a new twist and I think you might enjoy it. Have a look.

You all know about comets, those lovely pieces of space dust that occasionally strike our atmosphere and burn up in a fiery streak across our night sky. But, did you know that you could join a team that is trying to hit one? *nods nods* You sure can. And not only that, if you hop over to the Deep Impact Send Your Name to a Comet! site you can do that as well. Now how about that? Be the first in your neighbourhood to have your name on a comet? Go for it.

Ever thought you should have gone to college or university? Did you find that you couldn't afford it, or it was too far away, or you had other commitments that interfered with that plan? Well, if you want the knowledge (but not the degree) you can still do that. In fact, if you go to the MIT OpenCourseWare OCW Home website and register (for free) you can then download the coursework for loads of degrees. This is a new attempt to spread the knowledge among all of us on the planet, and to be frank, it looks like a wonderful idea to me. Have a look and get that study hat on again.

My Kiwi buddy and his lovely partner were staying with us a while back (and I'm visiting them this week as well) and he is a financial adviser for those who need that service (don't we all?). I wonder if he, and you, might find the INFOCHOICE site worth his wile? It does apply to the Australian consumer in that it is a site that has online financial tools and tips for Australian consumers, but the principles must be pretty much the same I would think. Have a look and see what you think. And, a special note to Rita - they (Ian and Gabrielle) brought the rain with them when they came to Queensland. I may bring it back *smiles*

If you're a game player and you play not only online games, or computer games, but also love things like crosswords, then the Puzzles - crosswords and codebreakers site might be right up your alley. Have a look. It looks like it could be a useful site for you to bookmark.

Now here is a site that is not only a chuckle for you, it's a BLOG as well. Hop over to The very silly WEBLOID NEWS- The Web's Humor Tabloid and have a look. I spent lots of time here chuckling to myself. You may too. Be warned *smiles*.

Digital
Women - Women with their modems running...

Rebecca Game of "Digital Women - Women with their modems running...", is a graphic designer who is superb to say the least. Rebecca designed this "new look" web site specifically for me, and I can't praise her work enough. Her site, dedicated to women on the net, is worth seeing and bookmarking for future reference. If you are looking for links of interest to women, please visit her site. And if you need the best graphic designer on the planet, I seriously can't recommend her more highly. Oh yes, and when you visit her site, tell her Mac sent you. Thank you Rebecca. I am eternally grateful for your assistance and expertise. ;-)

NEW! And now, from Lockergnome and all the techo folks at this great site, the latest headlines and tips.
